When an Association touts themselves, as SAHBA (the Southern Arizona Home Builder's Association) does, of being a "community builder," why won't they respond to the community? This website has grown out of our dissatisfaction with SAHBA. In 2000 we had a custom home built by a SAHBA “certified” builder - McCreary Homes. Our build was a nightmare, our home was riddled with defects and the resulting litigation led to us losing our land and our home. Our experience with McCreary Homes is chronicled at:

**KGUN 9 - ON YOUR SIDE?**
We let SAHBA members and executives know about our experience with McCreary and asked them to remove McCreary from their list of certified custom home builders. Despite the fact that our website is rife with pictures of defects, despite the fact that the Arizona Registrar of Contractors cited over 200 defects in our home - NOT A SINGLE SAHBA EXECUTIVE ANSWERED OUR COMPLAINT.
Their lack of response led us to protest at the SAHBA Home Show in April 2004. Did SAHBA talk to us then or respond to our request? No, they tried to have us arrested. (See full story under the consumer information section of this site) Their lack of response has led us to investigate SAHBA more fully. They are one of only 5 SUPER PACs (Political Action Commitee) operating in the State of Arizona. The Republican dominated industry and legislature is ripe for this kind of influence. Money talks and the legislature listens. SAHBA's main focus is to influence laws and regulations so that they favor the building industry. Some of their initiatives are blatantly anti-consumer. We felt the consumer needed a source to explore the mission that belies their slick advertising. They do not protect the consumer. Their so-called “certified” builder and remodeler programs are in place for promotion. While SAHBA doesn't hesitate to promote these people and collect their special fees and dues, they have given no indication that they actually enforce any standards at all. HOME BUYER BEWARE! Their lack of response to our questions speaks volumes.
Don't for a minute think that SAHBA's certification programs are in place to protect you - they are not. They are meant to disarm you. What does this certification actually mean? It means nothing. We feel that if the certification actually had enforceable standards it would be enormously beneficial to the home building public. However, we haven't seen that there are any standards applied. How can anyone trust any builder with the SAHBA certification? Their standards are non-existent. Even with all the evidence we presented they still back McCreary Homes. How can you trust any of the companies associated with SAHBA? No matter what their area of expertise is,whether it's real estate, sub-contracting, engineering, or any other area – how can you trust their quality? All SAHBA members are responsible for what their organization promotes.
Last February we emailed all SAHBA members and we recently mailed a letter to SAHBA members regarding our dissatisfaction with the SAHBA executive board and SAHBA's standards of membership. We received a few responses in the first few days - then silence. Apparently it is okay with SAHBA members if one of their own causes a family to lose their home. They don't care when a family in their community is ruined by a member of their association. Apparently it is okay that SAHBA standards mean nothing. If their standards mean nothing then their promises are empty ones. The community as a whole is diminished when an organization that touts itself as a purveyor of quality is allowed to act with impunity. They don't seem to care when a member doesn't live up to their standards. Their advertising is false – and the community pays a price.
